The parent of this variety is the Traminer that evolved perhaps
around 1000 AD around the northern Italian town of Tramin (pronounced
Tra-meen).This variety which mutates readily, gave rise in Germany to
a vine whose berries at maturity are dark pink and whose wines are
somewhat more spicy. Since gewürz is a German word for spicy, the
mutation was called Gewürztraminer. The variety was introduced to
Alsace after 1870.
